wealth of knowledge in epilepsy management.

Epilepsy Matters Cymru offers education and training based on up-to-date

clinical information. Education is provided face to face to enhance the learning experience. Individual consultations are also available for people

with epilepsy as well as their families and carers.

Keri's clinical practice is underpinned by evidence based care and adheres

to the recommendations advocated by the National Institute of

Clinical Excellence (NICE), the Epilepsy Specialist Nursing Association

(ESNA) and Nursing and Midwifery Code of Conduct (NMC).

Epilepsy & Seizures

Epilepsy is one of the most common neurological conditions and seizures are often unpredictable. Unexpected seizures or prolonged seizures, or accidents related to these, are one of the most common reasons for hospital admissions, including prolonged seizures. Many of these admissions could be prevented if care staff were trained in the management of epilepsy and also the use of rescue medication, to successfully treat the person in their own home.

The impact of having a diagnosis of epilepsy is multifaceted. The co morbidities associated with epilepsy, particularly on the quality of life, cannot be underestimated. Ultimately successful management of epilepsy requires a multidisciplinary approach and should focus on holistic care. Epilepsy Matters Cymru offers a service to promote successful management and can contribute to that multidisciplinary approach.

Dissociative Seizures/Non Epileptic Attacks

Dissociative seizures or non epileptic attacks come under the umbrella term of Functional Neurological Disorder. These are not due to abnormal electrical disturbance in the brain but often occur as a result of overwhelming feelings of distress. It is sometimes described as the brains way of 'shutting down' to protect itself from the overwhelming feeling of distress.  Successful management requires a multidisciplinary approach. Epilepsy Matters Cymru can provide consultations to enable the individual to understand the condition and provide management strategies to reduce their frequency and ultimately enhance quality of life.
